A WET season adventure is just one scoop away for our backyard tourists.
Tropical fruit farms, rainforest ice-cream shops and cultural tours are the focus of the latest Buy Douglas: Build Douglas video encouraging people to soak up a wet season adventure in Douglas Shire.
Walkabout Adventure Tours operator Juan Walker and Daintree Ice Cream Company owner Dave Mainwaring take us on an adventure from Cooya Beach, to across the Daintree River and into our stunning World Heritage-Listed rainforest, showing there’s plenty to explore in our own backyard.
Juan has been operating in the Douglas Shire since 2010, teaching people about Kuku Yalanji history and the beautiful region we live in.
“There’s no better way to learn about Country than to come on a Cultural experience,” he says.
Juan says its especially important for children: “Children from all ages can come on the tour. It’s really important for children to learn because they’re the next ones coming through.”
From bush tucker, to bush medicine, to understanding the tides and mud crab fishing, Juan’s adventure tours offer a rich cultural experience.
Whether you’re wrapping up a half-day tour with Juan, or continuing on a full day adventure up the Daintree Coast, another must-stop is the Daintree Ice-Cream Factory, about 20 minutes north of the river.
Dave flies a flag for the unique local businesses in the Daintree. Not your average ice-cream shop, Dave’s small business is set among lush rainforest where fruit is grown on site.
“Many businesses rely on us to offer a unique experience, and in turn we depend on them to bring people to us,” he said.
“We grow a huge variety of tropical fruits, mostly exotic, but local fruit as well.”
Dave tells us the most popular flavour is of course, chocolate, which he has started growing at his plantation.
After polishing off a delicious locally-made ice-cream, an explore around the grounds is definitely worth your while. There is sure to be a good trivia game in identifying the different fruit varieties!
Scoop Up A Wet Season Adventure is the final story of our Buy Douglas: Build Douglas Christmas campaign. Whether its heading out for brunch in Macrossan St, getting your air conditioning units cleaned and serviced, buying your Christmas and birthday gifts, or getting out and about on a wet tropical day, we encourage all to #DoItInDouglas!
