THE owner of a printing business in Mossman is confident the Douglas Shire business community can overcome the COVID-19 economic downturn.
Mossman Print owner Roy Weavers, a long-time local and publisher, has been slashing costs at his Front Street shop since lock down measures were introduced earlier this year.
Although he admits his business is hanging by its fingernails, the savvy businessman believes he, along with other local businesses, will quickly regain the strength to continue servicing the community.
“This Shire has always been good at answering the call to the pressures from outside influences and let’s face it, these current influences could not be any harsher,” Roy said.
“Being a glass half-full type of person, I’m sure that our Shire and country will meet the challenges of this merciless crisis and if we keep working together, we will be in a position to resurrect our local commerce to regain that pre-coronavirus strength – if not stronger.
“Buying from local businesses means the most essential services can continue to be self-sufficient and ensures products and services remain available through the crisis.”
Mossman Print, which first opened in 2014, offers printing from small individual jobs to production quantities, plus promotional designs and solutions through to scanning, emailing and all office services.
Their design services are included in the printing costs and production is all in house.
Every aspect of Roy’s three prong approach to his business have been dramatically impacted, the biggest being the loss of volume print jobs for the accommodation sector.
He has been helping many residents with small print jobs and photocopying forms for governments, such as Centrelink applications, and parents who are struggling with home teaching.
“The second part of our business is servicing the small local businesses with their promotions, business cards and printing requirements. This volume has gone down considerably as smaller companies try to cut costs and hang on in there,” Roy said.
“The third and last part of our business is the large organisations and their volume print jobs such as room menus, compendiums, DL flyers and general daily admin forms. This has disappeared almost completely because most of the hotels, accommodation houses and restaurants have been forced to close.”
