A DOUGLAS brewery is turning the tap on innovation and resilience in the face of the COVID-19 economic downturn.
Hemingway’s Brewery, located at the Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina in Port Douglas, has released a new, affordable craft beer to FNQ locals.
The fresh brew will complement their free delivery and discounted “resilience” pricing for local beer lovers.
It comes as the Economic Recovery Group launches Buy Douglas:Build Douglas, a community initiative aimed at encouraging people to #DoItInDouglas.
Hemingway’s CEO Tony Fyfe said they were now relying on online beer sales and local delivery, which has “ramped up” in recent weeks.
“Supporting local is key to the whole community getting through this very difficult phase,” he said.
“Every year during the wet season, we have a ‘mini recession’, but we are prepared for that and can plan ahead.
“If everyone can just do their bit and share the love around, even in just a small way, we increase our chances of having a thriving and vibrant tourist attraction when we finally get to the other side, whenever that may be.”
Hemingway’s Brewery sales have dipped to about 1% of their pre-COVID sales, losing a number of weddings, functions and corporate events in their 600-person capacity venue.
Commercial keg sales have also dried up due to the closure of hospitality venues and a majority of staff stood down.
A small caretaker team is working hard on new ideas and strategies to make sure the business can be viable in the post-COVID world.
“It’s been a stressful and emotional time for all our team but we are really proud of those who have put their hand up to offer their assistance in any way they can,” Tony said.
“Many are going above and beyond what we can expect of them. We are also really grateful for the support of our many loyal locals.”
The brewery has also launched its own #lagerlegends campaign as a way to bring positivity into the community. Every week they are taking nominations from the public for people who are doing great things in the community.
